PSIR's team, comprised of Charles Jones, Kevin Mondy Jr., Tre’ Bohannon and Tyric Simmons, competed in rounds of technical excellence competitions including Engineering Design and Robotics, Advance Model Rocketry and MathCounts at the 2012 National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) National Conference. PSIR placed first in Engineering Design and Robotics, Advance Model Rocketry and fifth overall in MathCounts. Let's all congratulate them on their achievements!

PSIR & Comerica Bank are honored with 2012 Texas Bankers Association Award

Project Still I Rise and Comerica Bank will be the 2012 recipients of the Texas Bankers Association Cornerstone Award. The Cornerstone Award is given to recognize Texas banks that have made a commitment to be cornerstones of their communities. PSIR and Comerica Bank have partnered on the development of the Comerica Bank Community Resource Centers.

2nd Annual Community S.T.E.M. Conference on April 28th at UNT Dallas

PSIR will host its 2nd Annual Community S.T.E.M. Empowerment Conference and Town Hall at the UNT Dallas from 10AM - 2PM on Saturday, April 28. CSEC is a grassroots initiative devised to connect young people to educational opportunities that inspire them to develop the critical science, technology, engineering and math skills they need to become problem-solvers of tomorrow. The first CSEC featured a panel of S.T.E.M. professionals from Texas Instruments, Rockwell Collins, UTD and Cisco/VCE to discuss how their educational backgrounds play a pivotal role in their careers today. The workshops were key in helping students connect S.T.E.M. to the world around them. Don't miss this opportunity to delve into how S.T.E.M. affects our community and how to prepare our kids to be the next generation of leaders!

PSIR's Empowered Pedals Program - Donations & Volunteers Needed!

PSIR is currently seeking donations of used bicycles and bicycle parts for its Empowered Pedals Program. The Empowered Pedals Program is a social entrepreneurship initiative created by Project Still I Rise dedicated to promoting physical activity with cycling to prevent obesity. Through EPP -- youth will develop critical thinking skills, financial literacy, mechanical skills and teamwork. PSIR URBAN STEM CAMP

As a continuation of the effort to make S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, andmathematics) curriculum more available to urban middle-school students – Project Still I Rise (PSIR) initiated an Urban S.T.E.M. held at the University of Texas at Dallas. The Urban S.T.E.M. camp gave 15 male middle school participants an opportunity to experience college life, be exposed to S.T.E.M. based professionals and receive education and instruction on advanced math principals. Students also participated in a math skills competition and an engineering design competition based on renewable energy. Project Still I Rise would like to thank the following guest company employee presenters Terrence Southern of Frito-Lay, Desmond Blair University of Texas at Dallas, Reggie Bush of Rocwell Collins, Rochelle Dillon of Raytheon and Matthew Fisher the Founder and CTO of KumoTek Robotics.

PSIR is Making An Impact

This summer, Project Still I Rise Inc. is facilitating a summer camp program for 25 students who live in the Frazier Neighborhood. These students primarily attend school at Dallas ISD's Frazier Elementary, Paul L. Dunbar Elementary and Bill E. Dade Middle School. The goal of this camp is to make the transition for these students much easier as they feed into feeder campuses at the beginning of next school year. This project is also a part of the Frazier Neighborhood Initiative, a community-led initiative designed to improve the quality of life for residents living in the Frazier community (75210, 75215). Students participate in academic enrichment, life and social skills classes, as well as health and wellness workshops daily.

Project Still I Rise to host First Urban S.T.E.M. Camp at UTD

Project Still I Rise will host its First Annual Urban S.T.E.M. Initiative Camp at the University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson, Texas, to be held Wednesday, July 13, 2011 through Saturday, July 16, 2011. The camp will serve 15-20 middle school students, providing them with an intellectually-stimulating environment designed to strengthen their Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic skills, as well as further cultivate an interest in S.T.E.M. disciplines. The camp will span three days, with the kickoff on Thursday at 8:30AM by title sponsor and partner, Rockwell Collins. An oral team presentation competition amongst the participants will be held at the closing ceremony on Saturday, July 16, 2011.

Other sponsors and partners of the camp include The University of Texas at Dallas, The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Texas Instruments, Comerica Bank and Raytheon.

Project Still I Rise receives funding from Rockwell Collins, aviation and government contractor, in support of various S.T.E.M. initiatives and programs, such as the upcoming PSIR S.T.E.M. Camp. Rockwell Collins lends both financial and human capital to the cause, in order to increase the capacity and resources to serve PSIR students and mentees in pursuit of academic excellence and achievement.

Rockwell Collins is a pioneer in the design, production and support of innovative solutions for customers in aerospace and defense. Their aviation electronics systems and products are installed in the flight decks of nearly every air transport aircraft system in the world.

Project Still I Rise Hosts Community S.T.E.M. Empowerment Conference & Town Hall

On Saturday, February 19, 2011, Project Still I Rise Inc. hosted its first S.T.E.M. [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math] Empowerment Conference at the University of North Texas at Dallas campus. Project Still I Rise was able to create dialogue among administrators, teachers, middle-school students, as well as S.T.E.M. professionals and other influential members of our intellectual community to discuss the importance and criticality of S.T.E.M. and how it will impact generations to come. There are many nationwide initiatives devised to inspire young people to cultivate an interest in science, technology, engineering and math that they need in order to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Statistically, the United States is currently falling behind in math and science (our students ranking 25th in math and 17th in science). For kids in middle school today in the US, by the time they enter the job market – it will be nearly impossible to succeed without a good foundation in math and science.

Partners include the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) PSIR - PCI Chapter, The Coalition for Science Afterschool, NHP Foundation, Alpha Epsilon Boule’ Education Foundation, Texas Instruments, Rockwell Collins and Cisco Systems, Inc. and Virtual Computing Environment (VCE). Project Still I Rise will continue with its programs and efforts to make S.T.E.M. a priority in our community so that our students will have a place in the next decade.

Project Still I Rise Sees S.T.E.M. Success in Ellis Green

Ellis Green, a PSIR PMLI program student since 2009 won 1st place in the 6th grade division of the Harmony School of Nature and Athletics School wide Science Fair on Saturday, January 15, 2011. His project covered the affect of the four forces of aerodynamics on the flight pattern of glider planes and how the understanding of these forces helped him become better at his hobby of making paper airplanes. Ellis has participated in several events with PMLI including Math Counts and the 2009-2010 “Aiming for the Stars” African American Male Academic Bowl. The skills developed with exposure to these events have help greatly with his ability to compete confidently.

Project Still I Rise Receives Technology Grant From Comerica Bank

On December 14, 2010, Comerica Bank opened its 95th full-service banking center in Texas, its I-20 & Wheatland location, at 2875 Wheatland Road in Dallas. The new banking center is the fifth Comerica location in South Dallas, and the third to be built since 2009. To help celebrate the holiday season opening, Comerica donated $10,000 to Project Still I Rise, a local non-profit that provides mentoring and leadership development programs for South Dallas youth, to purchase laptops for students of low and moderate income families that have excelled both inside and outside the classroom.

Pat Faubion, Comerica’s Texas Market President, along with Irv Ashford, Comerica’s Senior Vice President of Community Development & External Affairs, and Tennell Atkins, Dallas City Councilmember for District 8, handed out the new laptops to the surprised students during a holiday gifting ceremony at Comerica’s newest banking center.

“We believe in the work that Project Still I Rise is doing to empower youth in the South Dallas community, and to show our support, we decided to give laptops to their top 25 students to help them be more successful in their academic endeavors,” said J. Patrick “Pat” Faubion, Comerica’s Texas Market President. “This holiday gift is just one way that Comerica is helping shape a better future for South Dallas.
